Owl City just released “Good Time,” an infectious duet with Carly Rae Jepsen. The man behind Owl City, Adam Young, stopped by B96/Chicago to talk about the new track, his forthcoming album, and his relationship with country starlet Taylor Swift.

“Good Time” came together by what Adam called “a meeting of the minds.”

“My manager and Carly’s manager had grown up together, and unbeknownst to me, I had written Carly an email and said, ‘Here’s a new track I just produced. I do this stuff called Owl City. What do you think?’” Adam recalled. “And she said, ‘I’m totally a fan of what you do. I’ve been to two of your shows already.’”

Owl City made his mark on the music scene in 2010 when the single “Fireflies” exploded and sold millions of copies. Adam explained that the song came about from his difficulty sleeping.

“It’s really a kind of inherently quirky, bizarre painted picture of my struggle with insomnia, problems falling asleep, just kind of the quirky things that pop into my head,” he said. “I wanted to put them all down, and it makes for a quirky song. It just connects with people in a way I can’t believe.”

So, did that song help Adam introduce himself to Taylor Swift? Partly. Adam shared his side of the story.

“I had met her at a show in New York a couple of years ago, and she was a fan of what I do,” he said. “We just started emailing back and forth, and I ended up writing a song.”

Did they ever actually go on a date?

“No, we never got that far, but she’s busy,” he said. “She’s a sweet girl, it’s cool.”

Owl City’s new album The Midsummer Station will be released August 21 and he shared what fans can expect.

“I’m really excited about it,” Adam said. “It’s kind of a new departure from my sound. It’s a little more dance-ier, pop-ier, kind of bigger and more polished.”
